Jowl Treatments

What are jowls?

Jowls are the drooping or sagging skin and tissue that form along the lower jawline on either side of the chin. This condition is often due to ageing and loss of skin elasticity, reduction of collagen production combined with the effects of gravity; which over time, drags the skin down to form jowls.

Why do we get jowls?

Several factors contribute to the development of jowls:

  1. Ageing: As we age, our skin produces less and less collagen and elastic, which are essential for keeping our skin firm and elastic.
  2. Genetics: Skin structure, elasticity, and how facial fat is distributed in the face are all attributed to genetic factors.
  3. Weight fluctuations: Significant weight loss or gain can cause the skin to stretch repeatedly, resulting in loss of elasticity, causing the skin to become looser around the jawline and neck, contributing to the formation of jowls.
  4. Sun exposure: Extended exposure to UV rays can accelerate the breakdown of collagen and elastin in the skin, which contributes to the premature sagging and formation of jowls.
  5. Lifestyle: Smoking and poor diet can contribute to premature ageing of the skin. Smoking reduces blood flow to the skin, impairing the formation of collagen and elastin, which a suboptimal diet deprives the skin of the necessary nutrients to produce collagen and elastin.

How can I prevent jowl formation?

To help prevent or minimise the formation of jowls, consider these preventative strategies:

  1. Sun protection: Protect your skin from the sun using a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 daily. This helps to prevent premature breakdown of collagen and elastin.
  2. Healthy lifestyle choices: Maintain a diet that’s high in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals to support healthy skin. Avoid smoking and limit alcohol consumption.
  3. Regular exercise and skin care: Engage in physical exercise to promote circulation, which aids in nutrient and oxygen delivery to the skin. Additionally, use skincare products that promote collagen production – these products contain retinoids, peptics, or hyaluronic acid.
  4. Facial exercise/massages: Helps to stimulate blood flow to the face and promotes overall skin health.

How do I treat my jowls?

There are many options to reduce the appearance of jowls, including non-invasive procedures.

The best course of treatment for your will depend on your age and medical history, so we can only recommend booking a no-obligation consultation with Dr. Lauren Lee to discuss your options, discuss the risks and benefits or each procedure and personalise a treatment plan best suited to your needs.
