Double Chin

Why do we get double chins?

A double chin is a collection of submental fat, leading to the appearance of a fold or second/double chin. It can be caused by various factors, including genetics, ageing, weight gain, and loss of skin elasticity. Medically speaking, it’s more of a cosmetic concern and can be treated without surgery.

What causes a double chin to form?

There are several factors that contribute to the formation of a double chin:

  1. Genetics: Some people are just predisposed to storing excess fat under their chin, and you’re more than likely to have one if your immediate family members have double chins.
  2. Weight gain: Weight gain can lead to fat being stored in various parts of the body and the chin is no exception.
  3. Ageing: As you age, your skin loses the ability to produce elastin, which causes it to sag and become looser, making you more prone to the development of a double chin.
  4. Post menopausal changes: Hormonal changes that occur during menopause can lead to weight gain and alteration of fat distribution in the body. Some individuals develop double chins in some instances.

Other factors that contribute to the development of a double chin include smoking, diet, lack of exercise, and poor posture.

How can I get rid of my double chin?

If you’re asking this question, you would have most likely tried everything else that’s available to you, including regular exercise and massaging.

Short of surgery, you still have a few options, but in order to truly determine if the treatments are suitable, you should book a no-obligation consultation with our cosmetic doctor to discuss the options.

Among the non-invasive options to remove double chins is fat dissolving treatment or adipocytolysis which uses synthetic deoxycholic acid, a naturally-occuring molecule in the body that helps break down dietary fat. When introduced into the treated area, fat cells are destroyed, leading to the noticeably reduced double chin.

If you’re considering any treatment to reduce the appearance of your double chin, please first have a discussion with a cosmetic physician to weigh up the potential risks and benefits.
